HOW MANY SMC ARE LEFT?

There are 325 SMC left on the road in the UK (i.e. with valid road tax). There are a further 2,209 SMC that are currently SORNED.

The total number of SMC was highest during 2017 Q3 (2,902). The number taxed topped out in 2005 Q4 and the total SORNed was at its maximum during 2024 Q1.

Since the total peaked, some 368 (13%) SMC have been scrapped or exported.

During 2011 Q1 the number of SMC that were off the road (SORN) exceeded the number that were licensed for the first time. This could indicate the owners are reluctant to sell or scrap their car as they view them as a potential future classic.

In the last 10 years the total number of SMC has fallen by 159. Licensed models have fallen by 760 and the SORNed total has increased by 601.

The 5 year trend shows a total decline of 267 SMC models. Taxed models have declined by 393 and the SORNed total has increased by 126.

87% of the remaining 2,534 SMC in the UK are currently off the road.
