HOW MANY GENERIC ARE LEFT?

There are 158 GENERIC left on the road in the UK (i.e. with valid road tax). There are a further 1,441 GENERIC that are currently SORNED.

The total number of GENERIC was highest during 2016 Q4 (2,437). The number taxed topped out in 2011 Q4 and the total SORNed was at its maximum during 2024 Q2.

Since the total peaked, some 838 (34%) GENERIC have been scrapped or exported.

During 2017 Q3 the number of GENERIC that were off the road (SORN) exceeded the number that were licensed for the first time. This could indicate the owners are reluctant to sell or scrap their car as they view them as a potential future classic.

In the last 10 years the total number of GENERIC has fallen by 674. Licensed models have fallen by 1,257 and the SORNed total has increased by 583.

The 5 year trend shows a total decline of 434 GENERIC models. Taxed models have declined by 424 and the SORNed total has fallen by 10.

90% of the remaining 1,599 GENERIC in the UK are currently off the road.
